FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most common questions about externally funded scholarships and fellowships.  If your question isn’t answered here, please contact our office at ncs@appstate.edu or schedule an advising appointment.

What do Nationally Competitive Scholarships Advisors do, and how can I contact one?
NCS advisors provide insight, guidance, and logistical support to students considering nationally competitive scholarships or fellowships. You can reach the NCS office by emailing ncs@appstate.edu or by scheduling an appointment under the “Schedule an Appointment” tab in the menu.

When should I start looking into scholarships and fellowships?

Start as early as possible. Many deadlines are nearly a year before programs begin, and early planning gives you more time to strengthen your application, build faculty relationships, and engage in activities that demonstrate you are a well‑rounded, competitive candidate.

What is the difference between a fellowship and a scholarship?
The terms fellowship, grant, and scholarship often overlap. Fellowships typically fund study, research, or teaching in the U.S. or abroad and are considered an investment in your future potential. Scholarships usually refer to financial awards — often at the undergraduate level — for general education expenses based on academic achievement, sometimes combined with financial need.

Most fellowships are scholarships, but not all scholarships are fellowships.

How do I know if I am qualified for a given fellowship?

Most fellowship websites list clear eligibility criteria such as citizenship, field of study, and academic level. Many also evaluate qualities like strong academics, research experience, leadership, motivation, and community engagement.

What should I do to prepare myself for a Nationally Competitive Scholarship?

Visit the Application Guidance tab for useful tips on how to prepare for a Nationally Competitive Scholarship.

What is an institutional endorsement or nomination?

Some scholarships require applicants to be formally endorsed or nominated by their college or university. This means your application has gone through an internal review process and is submitted with institutional approval. NCS manages this process, which is why it is important to work with us early and consistently.

Can I apply for more than one fellowship?

Yes. You may apply for as many fellowships as you wish, and doing so does not hurt your chances. Many fellowships overlap in purpose or field, but you must tailor your materials to each award’s specific criteria.

Can I receive more than one fellowship at the same time for the same activity?

You may apply for multiple awards, but you often cannot accept overlapping funding for the same project or activity. Most programs have strict rules about duplicate funding, so you must inform all funding organizations if you receive multiple offers.

I am not a U.S. citizen. Can I still apply for fellowships?

Yes. While many fellowships require U.S. citizenship or permanent residency, there are several awards for international students. Visit our award opportunities page for fellowships open to non-U.S. citizens.

How long is the application process?
Many deadlines occur up to a year before the fellowship period begins. Start early and create a timeline to ensure you have enough time to develop competitive materials and meet all requirements.

Who is available to help me write my application essays?
NCS advisors and our network of campus collaborators can assist with all parts of your application, especially essays. The University Writing Center in Belk Library is another excellent resource. For guidance on getting started, explore the materials under Application Guidance.

Can NCS help me to find scholarships for funding my tuition and expenses at App State?
Yes and no. NCS can support you in preparing competitive applications for any scholarship or fellowship. However, for general financial aid or tuition‑funding opportunities, please visit your department’s scholarship page or the Office of Student Financial Aid and University Scholarships

I just found the perfect fellowship, but the deadline passed two days ago. Can I still apply?
No. Fellowship deadlines are strict and cannot be extended. However, you can prepare now to submit a stronger application in the next competition cycle

My grades aren’t the best. Do I still have a chance?
Possibly. Some programs emphasize top grades, but many consider the full scope of your application. If you demonstrate leadership, commitment, and excellence in other areas, you may still be a competitive candidate.

I had a bad semester due to circumstances beyond my control; because of this one semester, my GPA is lower. Can I still apply?
Yes, if your GPA meets the minimum requirement or if no minimum is stated. You should briefly explain the circumstances in your application. In some cases, the Fellowships Advisor or a recommender can also include a letter addressing exceptional circumstances.

Does NCS assist alumni who wish to apply?

Yes. Many alumni are even stronger applicants after gaining experience beyond college. All NCS resources available to current students are also available to alumni.

If I don’t win the first time, should I reapply for the same fellowship?
Yes, as long as you still meet eligibility criteria. Reapplying can demonstrate persistence, maturity, and sustained commitment to the fellowship’s mission.

What is the difference between an internal and official deadline?

The internal (campus) deadline is set by NCS to allow time for a full campus review, selection of nominees when required, and preparation of application materials before submission.

The official deadline is set by the sponsoring organization.
